Swedish wineries — who'd have thought it?
The recent heatwaves throughout the northern hemisphere have set record temperatures in a number of locations. Not the least of these have been traditional grape-growing regions (eg. Europe's heatwave cooks French vines). This has focused attention in the wine world on the current suitability of these regions for making premium wines, at least with their current grape varieties (eg. Bordeaux winemakers allow new grapes to fight climate change). The Millennial “warm climate” used to be the Baby Boomer “cool climate”.

De duurste whiskyproeverij ooit wordt dit najaar gehouden in Göthenborg in Zweden. De complete Ichiro’s Malt Card Serie wordt van 1 tot 3 november geproefd in het Upper House Hotel. Een ticket kost bijna 21.000 dollar.

Italian wines are since long loved by Scandinavians. But on Monday the 27th of May the roles were changed when Scandinavian wines were presented in Piedmont during a seminar held for the Master in Wine students at UNISG in Pollenzo. The presentation gave an overview of the long and sometimes complicated history of alcohol in Nordic countries, from the Viking ages and the belief that God connected to humans through intoxication, to the ”big Nordic inebriation period” from the 16th to the 18th century, during which akvavit was seen as a universal solution to all problems and to the 19th century´s excessive alcohol consumption in Scandinavia (the average consumption per capita of pure alcohol in Sweden was 45L per year in 1829!).

Norway’s state health directorate wants to ban the sale of wine in large three-liter cartons, claiming they lead to higher alcohol consumption. Protests were loud and swift, with the government now likely to cork the authorities’ plans before they go much further.

Wijn is in Noorwegen amper te betalen.
Wat zou zo’n drie liter verpakking dan wel niet kosten?
Een paar 100 euro? En dan uiteraard in Noorse Kronen.
