Anders dan zijn naam doet vermoeden is Yarden op deze foto niet overleden maar ondanks z'n leeftijd springlevend. Onlangs nog in het glas gehad. 1995 Golan hoogte Cabernet Sauvignon Yarden en kreeg van onze wijngroep een dikke 90/100. Wel veel verkleuring en knap wat droesem.

China on course to be the world’s second largest consumer market for wine by 2020.

New wine import figures released by the Chinese government give us a glimpse into China’s consumer preferences in this burgeoning market.
The latest report from the Chinese government reveals that in 2017 overall imports of bottled wine in China rose by 14.6% in volume and 16.4% in value compared to 2016, putting this country on course to be the second largest market in the wine industry by 2020.
The figures also show that the Chinese are still buying French: French wines remain the market leader and account for 40% of the market share. However, New World producers such as Australia and Chile are rapidly gaining ground and saw a 33% and 24% rise respectively versus 2016. They are among some of the countries that have recently benefited from lower import tariffs and favourable trade agreements with China so these figures will most likely increase over the next few years.
The data suggests an ever-increasing interest in premium wines among Chinese consumers, especially from New World producers such as the USA that saw a 44.09% increase in value versus 2016 (compared to France’s 8.84% increase). As wine drinking becomes more commonplace in Chinese culture this figure will most certainly rise. In a similar vein to other big wine consuming countries, China is benefitting from a growing millennial market that is willing to spend a bit extra on a bottle than previous generations.
Red wine remains the most popular wine, due in part to red being both the national colour and a lucky colour in Chinese culture. White, on the hand, is often associated with death and explains the relative lack of interest in white wine among Chinese consumers.
As e-commerce becomes more and more accessible, Chinese customers have more choice than ever. Research shows that 21 million Chinese people buy wine on the internet. Together with social media, it has never been easier for the Asian wine lover to access the fascinating world of wine.

Le Château Lafite Rothschild pourrait commercialiser un vin chinois en 2018

Il y a quelques jours, Decanter révélait des informations inédites sur la commercialisation prochaine du premier millésime chinois des Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Cette annonce nous a incités à pousser l’investigation…
Après le Chili et l’Argentine, les Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) conquièrent la Chine ! Un pays que le groupe connaît bien, et de longue date : Christophe Salin, son directeur général ne ménage pas son énergie pour parcourir le monde – et particulièrement la Chine – depuis plusieurs décennies afin de faire connaître et goûter les vins de Château Lafite, marque la plus prestigieuse aux yeux de l’amateur chinois. Mais depuis avril 2009, le groupe DBR a franchi une nouvelle étape, avec l’annonce officielle d’un projet d’implantation en Chine, en partenariat avec le groupe national CITIC. Le Baron Eric de Rothschild soulignait alors l’importance de ce projet dans un pays où l’intérêt pour les grands vins croît d’année en année. Après de nombreuses recherches, c’est la province péninsulaire de Shandong qui a été identifiée pour accueillir le Domaine de Penglai. Son histoire viticole, son climat, sa géologie justifient la plantation des 25 premiers hectares en coteaux.

DBR (Lafite) a vu juste en s’implantant dans le Shandong, région au climat tempéré. Les brefs épisodes pluvieux sont suivis de belles éclaircies et les arrière-saisons se font très agréables depuis quelques années. A l’inverse, la plus célèbre région viticole chinoise, Ningxia, a connu de fortes pluies et de la grêle en 2016. L’année 2016 marque un tournant pour le Domaine de Penglai, d’après son rapport de vendanges officiel. Les quatrièmes vendanges du domaine présentent un équilibre physiologique et une qualité de rendement bien supérieurs aux trois précédentes, purement expérimentales. Les 50hl/ha de rendement engrangés avoisinent la moyenne française et augurent d’une capacité de production correcte. Sur les 25 hectares déjà plantés, 18 sont en production, qui associent merlot, syrah, cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon et marselan (un cépage obtenu par croisement entre cabernet sauvignon et grenache). 25 hectares supplémentaires pourraient être plantés en 2018, si les analyses se révèlent favorables. En effet, à la demande du groupe, une zone de 400 hectares situés autour du domaine aurait dès 2008 été réservée à la seule exploitation agricole par le gouvernement chinois. La préoccupation de DBR consistant à se prémunir contre toute implantation industrielle à proximité, avec les risques de pollution qu’un tel projet pourrait impliquer.
2016, premier millésime produit au Domaine Penglai, devrait ainsi voir le jour à l’automne 2018. Une information réaliste au vu de la qualité des vendanges, même si le groupe se réserve tout de même le droit de confirmer début 2018 cette commercialisation.
Aucune information ne filtre pour l’instant sur le vin lui-même, qui sera avant tout destiné aux amateurs chinois. Si Christophe Salin refuse de donner le nom de la future étiquette, l’ambition de produire un très grand vin est bien réelle, Rothschild oblige… En attendant d’avoir la Chine dans nos verres, trinquons donc d’ici là avec ce qu’elle produit déjà de meilleur, un château-lafite-rothschild, bien français, lui !

Zij geloven er in. Waarom ook niet? Ooit hebben wij ook onze neus opgetrokken voor Braziliaanse wijn. Ik denk dat we daar wel van zijn genezen. Ik kijk er in ieder geval naar uit. Nu maar hopen dat ze voldoende maken om ook te exporteren.

The European Union and Japan signed a free trade agreement on Thursday 6th July, which includes the abolition of customs duties on French wine imports to Japan. A very promising agreement for the sector.
Last Thursday at the Viticulture Congress, European Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan announced that “The European Union and Japan today signed a free trade agreement, which is extremely positive for our food sector. And more particularly for wines, which will be imported without tariffs “. This agreement will be effective from 2018 and is expected to save €145 million for European wine sector. In addition, Japan will accept 205 PDO (Protected Designations of Origin), of which about 130 are for wine and spirits. “This is the first time that the European model of Geographical Indications has been fully accepted in such a trade agreement,” said Phil Hogan. Of these 205 European indications originally included, 28 concern French wines.
Phil Hogan also spoke about the other free trade agreements, which are being negotiated with Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico, Vietnam and even China. These agreements are currently on the right track and could be completed by next year. Evidently, this represents very positive development perspectives for European wine sector that will be on an equal footing with Chilean wine on this market. The latter has been benefiting from free trade agreements with Japan and China, respectively, since 2007 and 2005, which naturally gave it a competitive advantage. Since 2015, Chilean wines has even stolen French wines’ first place in the consumption of imported wines on the Japanese market.
