The Russian Wine Industry from A to Z (2020)
Introduction
Winemaking and wine itself have always played and will always play an important role in the life of Russia, a country with a centuries-old history of winemaking, which has, of course, had its ups and downs. It is believed that winemaking already existed during the time of Ancient Greece, in particular on the Crimean Peninsula and the Taman Peninsula. Wine was always an integral part of imperial receptions and balls. The rapid development of the viticulture and wine industries began during the USSR, but Mikhail Gorbachev’s anti-alcohol campaign seriously undermined the industry. It was only in the 2000s, with the influx of new investments, as well as the involvement of foreign specialists and young Russian winemakers, that a new stage of development began. The quality of wines produced in Russia is improving each year, while the country’s consumption is also rising.
This analytical paper presents the current state of affairs in the Russian wine industry. The concept of "wine industry" includes viticulture, winemaking, the wine market and the wine business.

‘I lived in a city of 21 million people. I had no experience or interest in the natural world’, she concedes.
‘My only passion was reading and collecting books. My high school had a large library and I spent almost every lunch break there, re-shelving books and helping people with their selections’, Dr Li recalls.
‘I think this experience is why I am so fond of cataloguing systems. I know exactly where to look for a particular field of knowledge. It has proven a very useful skill in my research career!’

Armenia may be a small, landlocked nation in the Caucasus Mountains today, but it used to be an expansive empire with shores on the Black, Caspian and Mediterranean seas. Armenian nostalgia runs deep, especially for Mount Ararat, a sacred and symbolic mountain. Ararat isn’t in Turkey; it’s in “Western Armenia”.

The Things That Remain
In 2006, during Lebanon’s short but destructive war with Israel, we lost our home but managed to save eight bottles of wine from the rubble including a 1988 Dom Pérignon Champagne from my birth year. At the time, I was 18. I had just graduated from high school and I didn’t know about or care much for wine. Neither did my parents: the bottles were stored in a dark living room cabinet. That might work elsewhere, but not here off the humid Mediterranean coast.
