Brunello Di Montalcino’s ‘Grand Cru’ Vineyard

Some areas of the world, like Burgundy, have an official system for denoting superior vineyards by using the term ‘grand cru’ for the best sites and ‘premier cru’ for second to best. The first inkling of carving out this classification is believed to have taken place during the 11th century with the Cistercian monks discovering the idea of terroir (sense of place). It is one of the reasons no other wine region evokes the idea of terroir more than Burgundy. But although other great wine areas such as Montalcino in Tuscany and their Brunello di Montalcino long-lived red wines (100% Sangiovese) have no official system in place, a hillside by the name of Montosoli has emerged as an impressive site.
