STUPID WINE DESCRIPTIONS
For the last 5 years I have published my list of the most stupid wine descriptions from the past year. The list is a compilation of what I think are the most stupid wine descriptions published by some of the 100 point wine writers. And, hard to believe, but these wine descriptions are written by these 100 point wine writers who are describing actual wines. So take a look and see if you think the description of the wine matches the actual wine or, for that matter, any wine that you have ever tasted. For me, the answer is a resounding NO! Therefore, I believe that these descriptions are prima facie evidence that many wine descriptions do not matter when using a 100 point system. After all, who would buy or drink any wine based on these descriptions? That only leaves the points as the basis for buying. And, sadly, for many people, wine is all about points. But, for the rest of us, we can get some laughs out of some of the descriptions! And we can drink the wines we like and like what we drink (click here to read my article on that subject).

If you don’t, you can’t have seen the film, and you should. Undoubtedly disgusting – swallowing other people’s spitty swill – but how much more keen would you be to drink from your very own spittoon? Even though all it contains is some of that lovely wine you spat out together with some of the saliva that you’d been unthinkingly content to host in your mouth. Once we’ve passed early childhood and its socialisation process, we tend to think very differently (in most circumstances) about our bodily products once they pass the threshold of our own skin.

De Vivino app faciliteert gebruikers om een score op een 5-puntsschaal aan de door hen geproefde wijnen te geven. Inmiddels zijn er alleen al in Nederland 83.000 wijnen op Vivino beoordeeld en is de Vivino-app 1,3 miljoen keer door Nederlandse consumenten gedownload! In discourse about wine, we do not have a term that both denotes the highest quality level and indicates what that quality is that such wines possess. We often call wines “great”. But “great” refers to impact, not to the intrinsic qualities of the wine. Great wines are great because they are prestigious or highly successful—Screaming Eagle, Sassicaia, Chateau Margaux, Penfolds Grange, etc. They are made great by their celebrity, but the term doesn’t tell us what quality or qualities a wine itself exhibits in virtue of which it deserves greatness.
