Correspondences: vines and anthropology – part 1

Katia Nussbaum of San Polino in Montalcino, author of last year’s coronadiary and this stimulating discussion of biodynamics, was particularly struck by the winning article submitted by our 2021 writing competition winner Chris Howard, a researcher and anthropologist currently based in New Zealand. The result is a fascinating correspondence that we are publishing in four parts this week. The illustration is by Katia’s brother Jono Nussbaum.

Correspondences: vines and anthropology – part 2

Katia writes This is all overwhelmingly exciting and I need to read it all calmly … con calma. Thank you so much for all your thoughts. You see, unlike you, I do not work in an academic environment so I easily wonder if I am odd in the way I see things, but no – I am obviously in the best of company! And yes, also I agree that wine and vines are the ultimate meeting ground for nature and culture, where in practice, not just in theory, the boundaries actually do, on the ground, blur and overlap and become nonsensical.

Chris writes Glad to hear the harvest is going well so far. Sorry for my delayed response – been a bit touch and go lately. I’m very impressed, flattered and feeling slightly guilty that amidst all the work to do in this critical, culminating moment you engaged with my chapter on that level. I thought you might look at it once your ferments were finished and your wine put to rest for the winter. Clearly, your mind is as busy as your hands!

French winegrowers call for an international reform of the Olympic average for crop insurance policies

French winegrowers call for an international reform of the Olympic average for crop insurance policies

After a devastating series of frost, hail, mildew and drought events, the 2021 vintage has not only seen French wine production fall, but also the Olympic averages of insurance companies, in other words the average production over the last five years minus the two extreme harvests, the best and the worst. With small yields that can finally be insured (with an excess clause), “who could imagine that business managers would be stupid enough to take out an insurance policy just for the principle of being insured when it does not allow them to tackle the reality of adverse weather events”, claims Jean-Marie Fabre, chairman of the French independent winegrowers’ organisation.

Music and wine – some reflections

18 November 2021 We're republishing this article to coincide with today's account of an amazing tasting of rare grape varieties, organised by its author.

25 May 2016 Robert Slotover is a classical-music agent with an abiding love of wine, particularly that made from obscure grape varieties. Here he muses on connections between his two great interests.

World Wine Production In 2021: Almost Record Low, France Drops To Third Place

2021 was a terrible year for wine production in several of the big wine-producing countries. Global wine production hit an almost record low of around 250 million hectolitres. All three big countries, Italy, France and Spain, saw substantial declines. France dropped from second place to third place in the ranking.

Missing Wines

Winemakers often are creative people who are happiest when they can experiment to see if they can improve on tradition.

Such activities, as noble and as fascinating as they are, often lead to projects that are simply not commercial. This is where wine marketing people come into play. They are typically ultra-conservative types, so-called bean counters who keep wine companies afloat by making sure that crucial funds are spent wisely.

Wine Takes a Holiday

Wine Takes a Holiday

We are smack dab in the middle of Hannukah, that time when latkes make their annual appearance on Jewish tables when debates emerge as to the proper preparation for this dish and when no wine in particular is served at the Hannukah table. And why is that? Why has no one type of wine emerged as the de rigueur pour for the Hannukah table? For that matter why has no single wine become the go-to pour for Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fathers Day, Mothers Day, the Super Bowl, Fourth of July or any other designated holiday in the U.S? The answer is we (the wine trade) just aren’t trying hard enough.

For consumers of festive beverages, the news is bad: this holiday season, Guinness may not be on tap and glass for bottling wine is scarce. Climate disasters, like British Columbia’s floods, have further weakened already troubled supply chains.

Wine: New and old vs emerging and established

For decades, the primary division in the world of wine was between the "Old World" of European wines and the "New World" of North America, Australia ND New Zealand, South Africa, and elsewhere. There is a need to update this for the modern age where emerging nations are creating products to compete in the global market with the old vanguard.

Visionary tractor concept is as entrancing as the wine it helps create

Farm machinery specialist New Holland Agriculture has teamed with the automotive design mavericks at Pininfarina to present a concept that's sexier than a tractor should be. Designed to improve upon the way premium specialty grapes are tended to, the pod-like Straddle Tractor Concept navigates multiple rows through steep, narrow hillside vineyards to do its part in bringing the most luscious, aromatic reds and whites to dinner tables and cocktail hours the world over.

WINE INTELLIGENCE’S INDUSTRY PREDICTIONS FOR 2022

The Worst Things In Wine in 2021

The Worst Things In Wine in 2021

I look back at 2021 and see a year of progress in the wine industry. Granted, this isn’t a difficult position to take if we are comparing this year to 2020. Still, 2021 looks like a year of recovery, and there were positive moves in the regulatory and legal spheres.

That said, I wouldn’t want to be accused of being a pollyanna. There are things going on in wine in 2021 that were not so great.

These are the worst things in wine in 2021.

'Don't drink your own wine'

When I crossed the Rubicon from wine drinker to vigneron in 1999, a wonderful thing happened. I was still living close to London at that time and I found that the cornucopia of wine tastings offered in the capital, maybe the most wide-ranging in the world, were suddenly open to me. I was in the business!

Pick and Mix

A couple of things have struck me recently. One was Richard Geoffroy, ex-chef de cave of Dom Pérignon, saying casually that he blends everything, even his breakfast orange juice. The other was a passage in Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life (Bodley Head, 2020) about male orchid bees. They ‘collect scents from the world and amass them into a cocktail which they use to court females. They are perfume makers. Mating takes seconds, but gathering and blending their scents takes their whole adult lives.’

What Will Be the Next Darling of the Wine World? Here Are Four Varieties to Watch

What Will Be the Next Darling of the Wine World? Here Are Four Varieties to Watch

Wine is similar to fashion. Some styles seem to have their moment in the sun, when everyone wants them. And then, inexplicably, they are out of favor. But there’s also the rotation of interest that comes from necessity: Something gets discovered, it’s a great value, more people hear about it, the demand goes up, limited supply forces prices to rise, and suddenly it disappears from circulation. As a result, those at the coal face of the wine world are always looking for the next discovery: wines that excite, but are affordable enough for all to enjoy. And now that cru Beaujolais is more popular than ever — and more expensive as a result — what will be the next darling of the wine world?
