One of the most important debates in the philosophy is about the degree to which specialized knowledge about varietals, regions, or production methods is necessary in order appreciate a wine. Do I have to know the Syrah I’m tasting is from form Hermitage in order to fully appreciate it? David Sackris in an essay entitled “What Jancis Robinson Didn’t Know May Have Helped Her” argues that knowledge does not contribute to the taste experience.

To Blend or Not To Blend?
There are countless steps between the start of the process leading up to a finished wine and the bottling of that wine. Some of my most cherished bottles are field blends produced from vines planted in the late 1800s. In such instances those first steps may have been taken in a foreign land, by a youngster growing up in a vineyard thousands of miles away.

The world of wine, for those who follow it, can appear to be unpredictable and chaotic, an organized ferment of a sort. In the world of horology (watches) there are similar furors. One element though in the watch world, that I’m searching for in the wine world, is the domination of one brand at the highest (super premium) level. In the world of watches, that brand is Rolex.

A 750ml bottle of wine is a good portion for two to share at lunch, or for a reasonably thirsty person to consume at dinner. But sometimes you open a wine and don’t want to finish it that night. Will it be OK the next day? Or what about the day after that? Or if you are running a wine program at a restaurant and want to offer wine by the glass: how can you make sure that a bottle open for a few days still delivers a quality wine experience for your guests?

In the early days of What Wine? magazine, the editor considered it a novel idea to invite actual consumers along to our tastings. If they were celebrities, even Z list celebrities, all the better. That’s how the professional wrestler Mick McManus came to be on a panel assessing Spanish reds. Mick had a great time. So good in fact that his notes were illegible. “Suits my taste”, scribbled alongside one toothsome red, were the only words we could use. When the magazine hit the shelves, the u had been substituted for an h. I still blame the typesetters rather than the sub-editor. We never heard from the Dulwich Destroyer himself, who might (just) have seen the funny side of the typo.

Among all the alcoholic beverages we consume, wine is most often linked with romance. The Roman poet Ovid, in his 17 A.D. work “The Art of Love” writes of wine that “It warms the blood, adds luster to the eyes, and wine and love have ever been allies.” The loss of inhibition and gain in confidence make wine a natural ally in games of seduction. But why not a nice craft beer or a shot of bourbon? Why is wine the beverage that signals romance? If it were the alcohol that explains the connection to romance any alcohol would suffice—yet, a can of “Bud” just doesn’t have the same meaning as a bottle of Dom Perignon. There must be something about wine in addition to alcohol that connects it to romance, likely its symbolic or metaphorical significance. Why does the idea of wine symbolize romance? One reason might be that wine can be expensive and thus signifies wealth. Expensive things are often seen as romantic. But, on the other hand, a 40 year bottle of Glenfiddich (Scotch), although it might set you back $2500, doesn’t connote romance either. So it is not just the expense that matters.

So, I’ve been looking at this parade from the sky box, of late, and it has eventually dawned on me why there is an endless cacophony among wine lovers. It wasn’t something that snuck up on me. No, it has been there all the time. It was there when I was just starting out. I was just too inexperienced (or immature) to notice it. It is definitely there now. In February 2020, Jancis and Nick's last pre-pandemic travels were to California. Writing about the trip afterwards, Nick declared his love for the restaurant Miminashi in downtown Napa. With its Japanese-style cuisine, and fun, casual approach to dining, Miminashi had gained increasing attention. It was written up in local as well as national newspapers and magazines, named one of the best restaurants in Napa Valley, and celebrated in multiple restaurant award lists. With so much attention, the restaurant was not just a locals’ favourite. It had become a destination.

I grew up in a winemaker’s family in Burgundy in the late 1980s, and though the region wasn’t trendy at the time, those of us in the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune were already living in a different world from ‘les grands de la Côte’ (d’Or). Literally. Whenever my dad had to go to Beaune or Nuits-St-Georges – respectively a mere 25 km (15.5 miles) and 50 km away from where I grew up near Les Maranges – he had to plan the trip as thoroughly as I must to travel during COVID-19 time.

Yet on the other hand, America's best selling wines are still, by far, the average-$10 brands — made in predictable styles that are the very opposite of "natural" or "artisanal" — that you can find on the shelves of every supermarket or big box store in the country.
