2019 Barbaresco: unhurried vines make classic wines

2019 Barbaresco: unhurried vines make classic wines

Enticing maxims aside, the best winegrapes are seldom grown in extreme environments. Whereas mild water and nutrient deficiencies can help reduce excessive vegetative growth—which may compete with fruit and buds for resources—severe climatic perturbations make grapegrowing impracticable. Intense rainfall encourages rampant canopy growth, promoting disease and retarding ripening; meanwhile, prolonged, intense drought limits photosynthesis, delays ripening, reduces bud fruitfulness and may result in sudden vine collapse. Challenged by increasingly abnormal and unpredictable weather events, Piedmontese winemakers hope for regularity, namely, uneventful vintages defined by an absence of trepidation and turmoil. Following two distinctly challenging vintages, 2019 Barbaresco marks a welcome return to normality, a ‘classical’ Barbaresco vintage yielding charming, structured, and age-worthy wines.

Refosco, Or The Color Of Friuli’s Top Red Wine

Refosco, Or The Color Of Friuli’s Top Red Wine

Name-wise, unsurprisingly the red-wine grape Refosco dal Pedunculo Rosso has a red stem. In addition to its color, this plant part is in specific relation: perhaps unhelpfully peduncolo means peduncle, which is a stem that ends at a flower or a fruit, this grape’s lifeline bestowing also the cultivar’s red name. The variety has been around what is now Italy’s Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region since the Romans, and the wines made of it long depictions in great acidity and tannins, of meaty savoriness, spice, green noted, rose, cedar, and of deep but also shimmying color. It is one of six native red grapes that along with at least two traditional reds stand alongside the many white varieties that make up 77 percent of FVG’s wines — “one of the highest proportions of any Italian region,” notes the educational wine database Wine-Searcher.

The Wine Business Is a Family Affair for Italian Moms and Daughters

There’s a renaissance happening in the Italian wine world, and women are leading the way. According to a Wine Intelligence study, women represent 55 percent of the country’s regular wine consumers. But in addition to their buying power, they are also making strides as wine industry professionals. Although only 10 percent of women are involved in production and in the vineyards, according to a joint study conducted by the University of Siena, Donne del Vino, and Unione Italiana Vini, their increased prominence and power in the industry is undeniable.

“All Italian White Wines Taste Alike”

from the archives I’m sitting at a table, in a restaurant, with a seminal figure in white wine. The beverage director comes up to us to say hello. A few pleasantries are exchanged. After all, we are guests, even if we are part of the “trade.” Our money spends as well.

Nebbiolo Prima: take 2

Nebbiolo Prima: take 2

Earlier this year, like Winnie the Pooh returning to the honey pot, I again attended the Nebbiolo Prima tasting event, the grand preview of the upcoming new releases of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero wines made from the wondrous nebbiolo grape variety. And, like last year, the event is both a pleasure and a challenge, a tasting of almost 350 wines where I willingly sacrifice the skin of my mouth and the enamel of my teeth to bring you, dear reader, an appraisal of these new releases. Of course, it’s all in the line of duty.

Devil's Advocate: Deep Dive Into Italy

Focused Wine Knowledge Necessary

In a recent column, I suggested that, instead of – or certainly as well as – focusing on broad wine education, more attention needs to be directed towards effectively providing lots of focused wine knowledge on specific regions and countries.

Drinks Atlas: Sicilian Wines

Drinks Atlas: Sicilian Wines

The Mediterranean’s largest island and home to important archeological sites, the world’s best capers, and the mythic Mount Etna, Sicily is also an ancient viticultural region with renewed promise. From its cuisine to its architectural influences, nearly every aspect of Sicilian culture weaves nuanced stories of the island’s complex history. Due to Sicily’s strategic location, the island was the subject of repeated conquests since it was first inhabited 10,000 years ago by three peoples, including the Siculi, from whom its name was derived. Thanks to viticultural practices developed under the Phoenicians and cemented by the Greeks as early as the 8th century BCE, Sicilian wines were among the best known and loved in antiquity.
