Michael Fridjhon: Commodity versus terroir wine
26 September 2019 12:55
It’s not difficult to make good wine: other than a reasonable winery and a degree of technical competence, all that you need are plentiful supplies of healthy grapes. Not tiny bunches with tiny berries harvested from ancient vines growing in obscure sites mid-way up steep slopes – just healthy wine grapes from any number of tried and tested varieties, competently farmed and fit for purpose. There are also plenty of places where suitable grapes can be farmed: all you need are ample supplies of water, reasonable sunlight, and a temperate climate. Torrential rain, high humidity, gale force winds are all weather conditions to be avoided.

Farm Workers Paying the Price for Cheap South African Wine
09 September 2019 17:42
SOUTH AFRICA, Sep 9 2019 (IPS) - Systembolaget, the Swedish government-owned alcohol monopoly, promises fair conditions – but it also uses its purchasing power to put a downward pressure on prices. At the major South African wine producer Leeuwenkuil, workers suffer as the company tries to cut costs. So far, none of the South African suppliers have been stopped due to violations against Systembolaget’s code of conduct.

Michael Fridjhon: What do top-end wine prices really tell us?
18 May 2019 13:23
It should be evident – from the flurry of articles about wine pricing – that my current soap-box issue is the concept of value (perceived or otherwise). Partly this arises from the industry’s necessary obsession about under-pricing – the cancer which has seen a frightening attrition of Coastal Region vineyard. The other side of the coin, however, involves asking the opposite question – what has happened to make us so inured to high prices?

Michael Fridjhon: What’s really going on in SA wine
16 January 2019 18:33
The drought years have – officially at least – given the wine industry cause for pause, to take stock of itself, and its probable future. For much of the past 18 months we’ve been told that unless grape prices increase, we’ll lose so many growers that the industry itself will shrink to the point that it will no longer have critical mass. The stats are real enough: in 2001 there were 4390 of them: 15 years later their numbers were 30% less (probably fewer than 3100 at the end of last year). At the same time the national vineyard has shrunk by just over 10%, from 106 000 hectares to 95 000.

Het zit dus goed fout. Wanneer je het weet kan je er ook iets aan doen.

Tim James: The old matter of wine scores versus notes
25 November 2019 18:05
The old, classic questions and problems keep on returning – as they must until a new reality renders them redundant (hard to imagine in the case I’m thinking of). I suppose that’s partly what “classic” means here, and I also suppose that each time the question is aired there will be someone to whom it is new – while the old hacks can scarcely keep down a yawn.

DO OLD VINES MATTER?
25 November 2019 18:23
I once found myself staring at a grenache vineyard in the southern Rhône Valley, along with a young California winemaker and a famous French winemaker. The latter was showing us the old vineyard that had produced the extraordinary wine we had just drunk. The Californian explained with great enthusiasm that he had recently planted grenache in California and couldn’t wait to taste the wine that would come from it. The Frenchman smiled and said, “I’m sure it will be great,” adding, “in 80 years.”

Tim James: Cooperation in the wine industry, for good and ill
09 September 2019 17:45
I was recently privileged to be a guest at one of the amazing tastings that the Cape Winemakers Guild members reguarly put on for each other – in this case the stupendously well-informed and well-prepared Andrea Mulllineux’s flights of Brunello di Montalcino (finishing with four Biond-Santis, 2011 back to 1964). The wines were brilliant, but I was also struck by the sense of camaraderie and wine-excitement now that CWG membership is growing palpably younger and less fixed in the Stellenbosch heartland (there were some candidate members attending who made these shifts even more noticeable). Amongst most of the members, I should say – a couple didn’t seem to pay much attention to the wines or anyone beyond their comfortable coterie.

Tim James: The fascination of field blends
11 May 2019 12:14
There’s a wine in Tremayne Smith’s The Blacksmith range called, rather alarmingly, These Old Bones. It’s a truly complex, exciting and lovely wine, the one I most enjoyed and admired at a recent tasting of Blacksmith new releases (including the Four Horsemen wines which I wrote about last week). All in this range of naturally made, fresh, textured and vital wines are highly recommendable, but I keep on getting sidetracked into detail before I can write generally about them. This time by These Old Bones, and especially the Paarl vineyard that produces it. Availability details first: Just 850 bottles of the 2018 were made and should sell for closer to R300 than R200 – and worth every cent – but I’m not sure from where; it’s not even yet listed on the website of the distributor, Publik.

Tim James: The rise of wine speculation in South Africa

The most obvious link between wine and art is not an aesthetic one, sadly, but a shared tangle of love, sensual enjoyment and money. In both cases there are producers and consumers (and dealers) seeking involvement with something that moves them greatly, both spiritually and sensually. In both cases there are those looking to profit. And it’s a tangle, as I say.
