Anne Krebiehl MW: why German wines deserve their exciting future

For the past two decades German wine has been on a roll with the country housing one of Europe’s most vibrant, creative and progressive wine industries. And yet the wines of Germany are some of the most misunderstood on the planet. In an in-depth and wide-ranging interview German wine expert Anne Krebiehl MW explains about the full trajectory of the German wine industry – early success, then doldrums, its current state of health and its direction – and why now is the right time for re-evaluation. She explains why there is currently an unprecedented density of quality production and a new generation of winemakers who are re-defining what German wine can be in the 21st century. Grape varieties have changed as have wine styles – with grace and elegance favoured over power – all the result of a new-found, more self-confident identity that was almost obliterated by two world wars and the disastrous legal framework of the 1970s.

This Medieval German Town Was Saved By Its Mayor’s Wine-Drinking Skills

History is rife with tales of drunken emperors and inebriated kings, whose lust for power was equaled only by their passion for booze. But could any of these debaucherous tyrants actually claim their lushed-up treachery did any good? According to the “Legend of the Master Draught,” a religious tyrant’s refusal of the drink and another ruler’s impressive guzzling skills eventually saved an entire German town.

Top 100 Wines of Germany 2019

Top 100 Wines of Germany 2019

Senior Editor Nick Stock and Contributing Editor Jack Suckling tasted more than 800 German wines on a weeklong trip to Germany this year. They also visited dozens of wineries and spoke to even more winemakers. They were impressed with the overall quality of the 2018s they tasted and were slightly in awe of numerous beerenauslesen as well as trockenbeerenauslesen despite the vintage being deficient in high amounts of botrytis. Many dry rieslings were equally inspiring, which were easier to produce because of the relatively consistent and hot growing season and clean fruit.

Simon Field MW on how German rosé is striving for its own identity

Although still somewhat immature as a wine category, German rosé has almost doubled in production over the past decade – up to 12% of all German wine production. Because German Pinot Noir is the third highest planting of the variety worldwide we can expect to see a lot more of German rosé, writes Simon Field MW, especially with so many quality winemakers making both high-end and commercial, populist styles. On a press trip entitled Think Pink! Field was introduced to a plethora of wines that showed many of the issues facing German rosé – most notably name and style – as it strives to forge its own identity in this fascinating category.

Wine Spotlight: Schäfer-Fröhlich Riesling Nahe Felseneck GG 2018

The top 5 wines of 2019 were rounded out by the top-ranking white wine in the list which was also the top-ranking German wine: the Schäfer-Fröhlich Riesling Nahe Felseneck GG 2018. This ethereal riesling from vineyards in the central Nahe region in Germany is an absolute thrill, with flint and gunsmoke coming through in spades, a testament to the steep and stony site.
