Summer campaign for Bordeaux En Primeur
After the shock of En Primeur week being suspended and with time for a rethink during lockdown, the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux (UGC
is rescheduling the presentation of the 2019 vintage next June, as a prelude to the marketing campaign. “A large majority of producers, merchants and customers have now agreed that the lesser evil is to hold an En Primeur campaign this summer”, claimed Ronan Laborde, chairman of the UGCB.

2019 Primeurs | How has this year’s campaign been organised?
The year 2020 has been exceptionally different in many ways, with the covid crisis causing significant changes at all levels of the wine industry (and, of course, way beyond). Understandably, the vast majority of events have been postponed or cancelled, and there was a particular focus on the primeurs in Bordeaux. The tasting of Bordeaux’s latest vintage did take place in the end, though later than usual and in a very different format from in previous years.

After being released for sale to Bordeaux merchants on May 28 at 9 am, the 2019 vintage of Chateau Pontet Canet sold out just three hours later. “We have sold everything released for sale, and there won't be a second tranche. All the feedback I’ve received from Bordeaux merchants is the same: they want more”, commented Alfred Tesseron, owner of the 1855 cru classé (80 hectares of biodynamic vineyards in Pauillac). Although the quality of the 2019 vintage partly explains the success of the En Primeur launch, the price also plays a major role. At 58 euros per bottle for the 2019s in Bordeaux, it is 31% cheaper than the 84 euro price tag for the 2018 vintage.
