Chateau Lagrange 2000

Gisteravond gedronken.
Had deze fles al heel lang liggen maar dacht steeds “nee, te jong”.
Inmiddels is de fles natuurlijk al volwassen geworden.
En inderdaad, een uitstekende fles wijn mag ik wel zeggen.
Dronk deze samen met twee oud-collega’s en ik schenk altijd in zonder iets later zeggen of te laten zien.
Altijd even hun reactie afwachten en ze keken beide zeer verrast en waren tevreden.
Toch leuk om zo’n flesje zo te nuttigen.
En van enig ouderdom was echt niets te merken. Zou je echt geen 19 jaar geven.

Cru Bourgeois will be reintroduced in Médoc

The designation Cru Bourgeois for chateaux has existed in Médoc for many years. Various attempts to rank them, roughly in the style of the 1855 classification, have been made since the 1930s. More or less successful. It was previously a (semi-official) classification but is currently a private label. But from 2020, a serious attempt will be made again.

Château Figeac retrieves its brand name, but not its monopoly

Château Figeac is not about to get a taste of its own medicine. The October 29 ruling by the Bordeaux Court of Appeal puts an end to the legal risks incurred by the brand name Château Figeac, the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé belonging to the Manoncourt family. The court’s First Civil Division has reversed revocation of the Château Figeac brand name ruled by the Bordeaux high court three years ago, on 29 November 2016.

Sauternes – an early Christmas delight

The Sauternes 50 index – a notoriously slow market mover – has risen 4.6% over the past three years. The broader Bordeaux 500 index has gone up 12.6% over the same period.

So far this year, Bordeaux’s fortunes have been mixed. Within its sub-indices, the Right Bank 50 has dipped the most (-3.1%), closely followed by the Sauternes 50 (-2.5%).

Zo jammer, ben zelf een behoorlijke Sauternes liefhebber. Jaren geleden ter plekke al vastgesteld dat de kelders van velen al overvol waren.

As it transitions from a sun-kissed summer to a rainy autumn, Bordeaux has harvested the bulk of its Merlot. “This is the first time I've been happy to see the rain fall at this time of the year. The grapes are ripe and rich, and the showers have come late enough not to spoil the momentum of the vintage. This is a very comfortable scenario”, said David Pernet, co-founder of the laboratory Sovivins. After keeping track of the vineyards of Gironde for twenty years, the consultant pointed out that there was “only one cloud on the horizon: alcohol content is sometimes too high”.

Over 150 years ago, many châteaux in Bordeaux had their fate decided with the red wine 1855 classification that placed 60 producers from the Médoc and one from Graves on a list that ranged from first growths to fifth growths according to prices; this would affect how they were perceived and priced for decades to come. For châteaux such as Château Pédesclaux, it was an honor just to be placed in the classification being noted as a fifth growth, however, another way to look at this is that this classification allowed many of the top wineries, such as the first and second growths, to continually improve their quality but created price restraints for those growths lower on the totem pole leaving little resources for advancement in the vineyards and cellar.

Moins 20 % en un an. Des ventes en chute presque libre, le vrac au cours le plus bas et qui ne trouve pas preneur, des professionnels pour le moins désorientés et malheureux. « On entre dans la crise », confiait un patron de château médocain, qui a par-devers lui « quelques vendanges au compteur ». Alors chacun, spécialistes de saison ou vrais sondeurs de conjonctures, y va de son diagnostic pour globalement redire ce nous savons déjà et avons souvent écrit. Et dans ce brouhaha, on entend surtout citer davantage les conséquences que les causes véritables. Chacun à son bouc émissaire... En effet, à des choses compliquées il est toujours souhaitable de trouver des explications simples. Surtout si l'on veut être certain de se tromper.
