Late pruning of the vine
In the current climatic context, with milder winters leading to earlier budburst in most wine regions, vines are exposed to the risk of spring frosts for a longer period. Depending on the year, frost can lead to yield losses of between 20 and 100 %, jeopardizing the economic survival of wine estates. In addition, by destroying young shoots, spring frosts can impact the following season’s production, by reducing the number of canes available for pruning, for example. Late pruning is one method to combat spring frosts (Ravas, 1912; Frioni et al., 2019).

At the end of February, I began to travel to catch up for lost time in Hong Kong after almost two years of what was essentially being locked down because of the pandemic. I landed in San Francisco, and my wine odyssey began with tasting hundreds of 2019 cabernet sauvignons and many other wines up and down the coast of California as well as Oregon and Washington. And then it was four months in Europe, mostly Italy and France, and finally back to the West Coast, Australia, and New Zealand. Some of the JamesSuckling.com tasters accompanied me along the way, while Senior Editor Stuart Pigott tasted on his own in Europe and others kept the tastings going in our office in Hong Kong.

Flicking through the fourth edition of The Oxford Companion to Wine (OCW) I came across a word that neither I nor my Google spell-checker were familiar with: ‘homoclime’. It is a geographical term meaning ‘a similar climate’.

A confession: I’m pretty sure I used the term ‘Kafkaesque’ before I’d read any Kafka. In itself this could count as faintly Kafkaesque in its admission that authenticity and the appearance of authenticity are sometimes interchangeable. So it was ok, then.
