I will never forget a customer I hosted in the tasting room at my first job. I poured him a taste of our Merlot, he took a sip, swished it around his mouth, and swallowed. I tried to read his face for a reaction, but he seemed undecided. I asked him, “What do you think?” and he responded “What score did it get?” A look of shock and befuddlement took over my face as I replied, “Why does it matter?” His answer was “So I know if it’s good!”

Dear Tom…I read your rant supporting wine scores. This has to be the most dundleheaded opinion I’ve ever seen. How can you justify using wine ratings to market wine when we know that the 100 point rating scale is a fraud. These “critics” who use the 100 point scale want to be seen to be objective and use 100 points to try to be seen as objective. And you know (so do they) that you can’t ever justify the difference between 92 and 91. The scoring of wine has made wine drinkers and others in this industry really dumb drinkers and really dumb sellers. It’s how we got all these Napa wines that are big, boring fruit bombs. I’m ashamed of you and anyone else who uses the 100 point scale or supports it. I’m done reading you.

A parallel can easily be drawn between the worlds of wine and coffee. The cheaper versions of each are widely available and economical, and can easily be separated due to their lack of quality. At some point, people tend to evolve from “it all tastes the same” to “I’m craving that same flavor experience”, and finally “I can’t ever go back, and now I’m ruined”. It’s hopeless when you reach this last point, and each day without what you crave is like a day without sunshine. But it’s not all subjective and trivial—there are discernible differences and tangible reasons for the variances in taste and quality.

The history of using wood for barrels and tanks is almost as old as wine itself. From about the 6th century to the 3rd century BCE, clay amphorae were used to store and transport various liquids such as oil and wine. But there was an inherent problem with amphorae: clay is porous and liquid leaks through it. So, the answer was to coat interior surfaces of the amphorae with pine resins.Today's Greek Retsina is the descendant of those early wines.

One does not have to spend more than a few seconds reading wine writing to realize that this is not normal human discourse. The writing style used for descriptions of wine seems to cover the full gamut of human expression with the sole exception of normalcy. That is, it covers hyperbole, flowery, literary, allusive, obscure, flamboyant, and sometimes (sadly) even pretentious.
